Marine conservation through research, recovery, and collaboration.
Abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear is a serious issue for the Pacific Coast of British Columbia. Over the past few years we have seen a steady increase in the rate of entanglement of marine animals in our waters. With approximately 800,000 tonnes of gear being added to the oceans worldwide every year, the scope of this problem is truly staggering.
ESPS is working to reduce the impact of this destructive phenomenon
There are many aspects to the complex problem of lost fishing gear, which claims the lives of hundred of thousands of marine animals each year long after they've been abandoned. From discovery (location and mapping) to recovery and recycling, ESPS is developing methods and working with partners to combat this important issue.
